How many perfectly proportioned pieces did you find in your home using "The Golden Oblong" rule? The next Principle of Design in this series of articles we'll discuss is the principle of scale. |

This quick guide, along with my other articles, will give you a new way of looking at that cushy sofa you want to buy and think it will go great in the family room. That's exactly what happened with my husband and me before we knew better. You got it; the sofa was way too big for the area. Fortunately, we were able to correct it before we got stuck with a big bill for a big sofa. Be careful with emotional buys, because they will obscure your judgment.

- Scale is the relationship of one object's size to another. For example, a lamp should be the right size and shape for the table it sits upon. Scale allows the eye to move easily around a room, but if neglected, you'll be disturbed by a piece that's too big or too small in comparison to another or in comparison to the room itself. Scale touches many levels in a well-designed room. Some aspects of scale are, the furniture feels appropriately sized for the room, where larger furniture pieces are balanced against smaller ones, the window coverings are appropriately scaled for the windows, and accessories such as sofa pillows aren't too big or too small for the furniture they're placed upon.

Scale is an important principle to get right. The average person can easily miss the principle of scale, because they sometimes get swept away by other things such as design, color and shape forgetting about size relationships. The result is a piece that feels out of place. On the other hand, a dramatic effect can be produced by a single oversized piece in a room. So, experiment with scale.

Did you know that in a custom-built home, the kitchen counter is usually measured for the cook's height? Fortunately, mass-produced furniture and houses are scaled to the average human body. Here's a tip that'll help identify problems with scale. Make a drawing of the room and its furnishings to scale, before you move anything. Remember, a drawing is two-dimensional, and solid furniture will feel larger in life than on paper.
